Arizona State University has been named as a Fulbright HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institution) Leader for 2023.

The designation, from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, recognizes the strong engagement of select HSIs with the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's flagship international academic exchange program.

ASU was first named as a Hispanic-Serving Institution in June 2022 and honored as a Fulbright HSI Leader for the first time later that year.

Fulbright HSI Leaders demonstrate support for Fulbright exchange participants and promote Fulbright program opportunities on campus. ASU is one of 25 doctoral universities to be named as a Fulbright HSI Leader this year.

“Now more than ever we need research-based ideas that impact how the international community engages with one another,” said Nancy Gonzales, ASU executive vice president and university provost. “We need more and more cultural exchange and knowledge sharing that enables the brightest minds from different backgrounds to connect and collaborate in ways that create equitable, safe and sustainable futures for all.”

“Our Fulbright scholars and students are leading this charge, and the faculty and staff who support them are critical to achieving these aspirations. We are deeply proud and grateful for those involved in making ASU a Fulbright HSI leader.”

ASU is a 2023 top-producing institution for Fulbright students and faculty scholars, one of only nine universities to earn the dual distinction this year.

“ASU’s continued high production of Fulbright recipients illustrates the persistent efforts of our students, faculty and staff to create a supportive community of excellence at ASU,” said Kyle Mox, associate dean of national scholarship advisement at ASU.

Karen Engler-Weber, program director and ASU’s Fulbright liaison to the Scholar program said, “It is incredibly exciting to see the ways that our Fulbrighters are taking their research and teaching from ASU to countries around the world, engaging in projects that not only support our charter, but have a long-term global impact.”

Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Lee Satterfield commended the institutions receiving the Fulbright HSI Leader designation this year.

“Representation matters and pairing the world-class educational opportunities that Hispanic-Serving Institutions provide with the power of Fulbright further enriches the experience and educational opportunities for students and scholars both at home and abroad,” Satterfield said.

The Fulbright Program works closely with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) to promote international exchange opportunities to staff, students and faculty at HSIs. This year’s Fulbright HSI Leaders were announced at the HACU Annual Conference, held Oct. 28–30 in Chicago.
