No limits to a mother’s love, a wrestler’s determination

Judy Robles was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, who would later be born with only one leg. As Anthony Robles grew, his mom realized that he defied limitations — "he was going to figure things out." Anthony went on to become an NCAA champion wrestler at ASU, and his life story is now the focus of a new Amazon Prime movie, “Unstoppable."

When Natasha Adair drove to the basket for a layup one October night in 1990, her future was right in front of her. She was a high school senior being recruited by more than 200 college coaches. But as she landed on the court and heard the pop in her knee, everything changed. Adair couldn’t have known then, but that injury headed her down a path that would eventually lead her to become the women’s basketball coach at ASU. “People often ask me if I would change what happened,” she said. “No. It made me who I am.”

ASU professor emeritus awarded physical education society's highest honor

Throughout his career, Hans Van der Mars, Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, has left his mark on physical education, teacher education and sport pedagogy. On March 30, that mark was honored at the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America National Convention and Expo, where he received the 2023 Luther Halsey Gulick Award.

ASU, Pac-12 partner to help student-athletes avoid harmful nutritional supplements

Though many student-athletes use a wide variety of nutritional supplements, the industry is not well regulated, says Arizona State University College of Health Solutions Professor Floris Wardenaar, who is designing a questionnaire to help identify student-athletes at risk of taking harmful nutritional supplements. Pac-12, the sports conference of which ASU is a member, is funding the efforts through its Student-Athlete Health and Well-being Initiative.

Zach Featherstone, who played five seasons for the Minnesota Twins, chose Arizona State University because of its extensive program offerings and split his days between his studies and the game.

As men's Final Four ends, ASU gets ready to host 2024 event

NRG Stadium, the site of the 2023 men’s basketball Final Four, was a cacophony of sounds and sights when Sun Devil Athletics officials visited this past weekend. But they weren’t in Houston to follow the games or get autographs. As they took a tour of the stadium wearing credentials that read “Future HOST,” they were thinking ahead to 2024, when ASU will be the host school of the Final Four.
