No limits to a mother’s love, a wrestler’s determination

Judy Robles was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, who would later be born with only one leg. As Anthony Robles grew, his mom realized that he defied limitations — "he was going to figure things out." Anthony went on to become an NCAA champion wrestler at ASU, and his life story is now the focus of a new Amazon Prime movie, “Unstoppable."
ASU and Colgate University teams play at new ice hockey rink

This month marks the 10th anniversary of ASU announcing that its club hockey team would be moving to the NCAA Division I level.

When Natasha Adair drove to the basket for a layup one October night in 1990, her future was right in front of her. She was a high school senior being recruited by more than 200 college coaches. But as she landed on the court and heard the pop in her knee, everything changed. Adair couldn’t have known then, but that injury headed her down a path that would eventually lead her to become the women’s basketball coach at ASU. “People often ask me if I would change what happened,” she said. “No. It made me who I am.”

Message to high school students: Sports careers not just for athletes

A group of high school students visited Sun Devil Athletics last week to learn about the careers they can have in sport, as part of the Global Sport Institute Innovation Lab, which was launched at Trevor Browne High School this fall.

ASU Law sports law and business program under new leadership

The Allan "Bud" Selig Sports Law and Business Program at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University has appointed Aaron Hernandez as its assistant dean and executive director. Evan Singletary has been promoted from program coordinator to assistant director. The program offers a Master of Sports Law and Business (MSLB), which students may also pursue concurrently with a Juris Doctor.

‘The Big Unit’ still pitching memorable moments

After 22 seasons in Major League Baseball, Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson traded in his mitt for a camera after his retirement, finding joy in photography. He shared his story at the Sept. 28 Greg Crowder Memorial Photojournalism Award event, where three Cronkite School winners were honored.

‘Tears and cheers’: Alumni Association recognizes 50th anniversary of Sun Devil Volleyball

This year’s Sun Devil Volleyball Affinity Reunion — an annual event held by the ASU Alumni Association to invite alumni of a particular school, academic affiliation, organization, club or group back to campus to reconnect and celebrate the legacy they shared at ASU — was a weekend, as some former players referred to it, that served as a perfect balance between “tears and cheers.” Old teammates gathered once more, trading stories and reminiscing on what it meant to be Sun Devils.

Pulitzer Prize-winning ASU professor pens coffee table book about NBA fashion

Mitchell Jackson has been an NBA fan for as long as he can remember. So when the idea of writing a book about NBA fashion was broached to him, he was immediately interested. After years of work, he's releasing "Fly: The Big Book Of Basketball Fashion," a photo-heavy coffee table book that will be available Sept. 5.

ASU sports historian to speak on state of sports in the US

A former NCAA national champion with a PhD in the history of sport, Victoria Jackson is well suited to speak on the subject, something she does often in the media and at Arizona State University, where she is a clinical associate professor in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies. On Sept. 6, Jackson will continue doing what she does best when she gives opening remarks for a public hearing: The Future of Olympic and Paralympic Sports in America.
