Renowned Chinese artist to give lecture at ASU Art Museum

He Gong, an internationally renowned contemporary Chinese artist, will explore China's social and cultural positioning at an upcoming lecture, titled "Looking the Way Out." In the lecture, he will also look at China's politics and economy through the lens of art. The artist will also discuss his art experiences both inside and outside of his native country.

The lecture is set to take place at 4 p.m., Feb. 4, at the ASU Art Museum, located at 10th Street and Mill Avenue on ASU’s Tempe campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

He Gong’s visit to ASU and the accompanying programming are sponsored by the ASU Libraries, in partnership with the ASU School of Art and the ASU Art Museum International Artist Residency Program, both part of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.

He received a bachelor of fine arts in painting and drawing from Southwest China Normal University, Chongqing, China, in 1982, and earned a master of fine arts from Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts in 1985. He also studied in the United States and Canada. He currently resides in Chengdu and is on the faculty at Sichuan University. Recent exhibitions include: The Hide Voice at the 55th Venice Biennale; From Without Time at the Contemporary Museum of Art in Chengdu; and Patagonia Wind at the Yuan Art Museum in Beijing.

Visitors are invited to meet the artist and learn more about his work and contemporary Chinese art at a reception immediately following the lecture.
