Fifth seeded softball to host NCAA Regional May 17-19

Arizona State softball has punched the program's 25th trip to the NCAA Tournament, hosting a Tempe Regional May 17-19 as the fifth seed overall. The Tempe Regional will be on TV on ESPNU.

The Sun Devils are 45-10 on the year and will play a San Jose State squad that is 42-15. With a fifth seed, Arizona State will not only host Regionals but also will be eligible to host Super Regionals.

The Tempe Regional field is Arizona State (45-10), San Jose State (42-15), San Diego State (35-18) and Georgia (38-19). On Friday, SDSU and Georgia play at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT; ASU and SJSU play at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT.

ASU is 11-1 all-time against San Jose State dating back to 1987. The last time the two teams met, ASU won 4-0 on Feb. 9, 2012.

Regionals will be held May 16-19 on 16 campus sites. At each campus site, a four-team, double-elimination tournament will be conducted and the 16 winning teams advance to the Super Regionals.

Super Regionals for the tournament will be held May 23-26 on eight campus sites. At each site, two teams play in a best-of-three tournament format. The winners from each site advance to the NCAA Women's College World Series. The WCWS is held in Oklahoma City from May 30 to June 5.
