A project by a group of Arizona State University students will be enjoyed by thousands of baseball fans during spring training this year.
Visitors to Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona, home of the Oakland A’s during spring training, will see a series of animated graphics created by students who work in Meteor Studio at ASU.
The seven students worked with team representatives and developed the videos in only a month, according to Anthony Delphy, a computer science major who was the student lead on the assignment.
“We looked at the material they had for the previous spring training and we were given some specifications and ideas they had thrown around,” he said.
The students proposed several ideas and the team officials chose their favorites.
“They liked the kinetic typography we made for them and they were excited to see how we could expand on their previous year’s assets,” he said.
“One thing we did was add Mesa landmarks, like Superstition Mountain and buildings that are in downtown Mesa. They were excited about that.”

Delphy said the project was a “design sprint” that they started in January and completed in February, just before spring training games began.
Meteor Studio is an engineering research laboratory that studies software and hardware systems for augmented reality and virtual reality, said Delphy, who is a student worker there. The studio is directed by Robert LiKamWa, an associate professor in both the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering and the School of Arts, Media and Engineering.
The student team includes those majoring not only in computer science but also digital culture, in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering, and animation, in the School of Art.
“We create immersive education experiences. Some are AR or VR, where you have to wear a headset, and others are phone-based,” Delphy said.
“We’re trying to do outreach to other organizations so they know we’re here, and that aligned well with the Oakland A’s work.”
The Oakland A’s project required the students to be creative within specific brand guidelines that dictated colors — the team is green and gold — and logo placement, among other things.
“With every pass, they would tweak it a little to be in line with the guidelines, but it was so fun to see everyone’s creative vision come together into one big thing,” he said.
Several of the students went to an Oakland A’s game over spring break to see their work on-site, and the team will honor the students before a game on March 22.
