Water polo falls to San Jose State at MPSF tourney
The No. 4 Arizona State University water polo team finished play at the MPSF Championships Sunday by placing eighth in the 13-team event after falling, 12-8, to No. 9 San Jose State in the seventh-place game at the Aztec Aquaplex in San Diego, Calif. The loss dropped the Sun Devils 21-14 on the season while the Spartans improved to 16-15.
ASU took an early 3-1 lead through the first quarter of play and held a 4-2 lead at the half before SJSU netted five goals in each of the last two periods of play. The Sun Devils only managed two goals each in the third and fourth quarter, trailing 7-6 at the end of three before falling, 12-8, in the final.
Senior Traci Aparicio led the way offensively for the Sun Devils as she netted three goals while freshman Lauren Hayes scored twice. The remaining goals were scored by Katy Lawlor, Addison McGrath and Bonnie Miles. Defensively, Caylinn Wallace stopped nine shots in the cage.
The Sun Devils will now await from the NCAA to see if they are one of three at-large selections into the NCAA Championships. The announcement will come Monday afternoon.
