Stanford top Sun Devil wrestling on Senior Day
The Arizona State University wrestling team concluded its regular season schedule at home Sunday afternoon as the visiting Cardinal of Stanford jumped to a 12-0 lead before winning the dual, 28-16, on Senior Day inside Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. The Sun Devils finished the year with a 9-8 overall record and 3-5 in the Pac-10 while the Cardinal closed out 2008 with a 13-4 record and 6-2 in the league.
The dual opened at 125 pounds with SU winning by forfeit before Porfirio Madrigil pinned Todd Schavrien in 6:44 to build a 12-0 lead. ASU got on the board at 141 pounds as Chris Drouin scored a 15-4 major decision over Max Rosefigura, cutting the deficit to 12-4 before the Cardinal won a pair of bouts to make the score 22-4.
At 165 pounds, senior Patrick Pitsch picked up a 4-0 decision victory to go out on top at home before fellow senior Rick Renzi fell in a tough 1-0 decision to Luke Feist at 174 pounds. The two teams continued to trade victories as No. 15 Brent Chriswell scored a pin of Zack Giesen at 1:02 of the 184-pound bout before Thor Moen dropped an 11-4 decision at 197 pounds. The dual closed with the Sun Devils winning the heavyweight bout as Imanibom Etukeren scored a 9-3 decision.
The Sun Devils will now take a week off from competition as they prepare to compete in the 2008 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships on March 2-3 in Eugene. The tournament will be used as a selection tool for the NCAA Wrestling Championships later in March in St. Louis, Mo.
