Softball's offense hot in Littlewood Classic closer

Ten runs scored with home runs from Kaitlin Cochran and Mandy Urfer highlighted the box score Sunday afternoon as the third-ranked ASU Softball team wrapped the 2009 Littlewood Classic title with a 10-1 win over Idaho State in five innings. Megan Elliott took the W for the Sun Devils, pushing ASU to 11-1 on the season after two weeks of action.

An error cost the Sun Devils an unearned run to the Bengals in the first inning, but ASU wasted no time in taking the lead right back in the bottom half though with Jessica Mapes leading off with a single only to have Kaitlin Cochran bring her home with yet another longball, this one off a 1-2 pitch to left field.

The second inning saw the Sun Devils unleash their offensive fury as they racked up eight runs in the inning, batting around the order. Mandy Urfer in her second at-bat of the inning crushed a shot over the left field wall for three RBIs while Katelyn Boyd collected an RBI single as the Sun Devils capitalized on two Bengal bungles.

Junior Megan Elliott pitched the complete game, allowing only three hits while striking out two and allowing no earned runs on the game to push her record to 2-1 while ASU enjoyed their 11th win of the season.

Up next, the Sun Devils get to stepping for the first time in the season as they hit the road to play some of the best in the nation next weekend as they compete in the Palm Springs Classic next Thursday, February 19 – Sunday, February 22 in Cathedral City, Calif.
