Policing and protests
We sit down with Professor Edward Maguire of ASU's School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, a nationally known expert on police use of force, particularly at protests and during conflict.
Throughout the summer, Maguire was frequently interviewed by national and international media to offer his opinions about how police deal with suspects and how they handled protests in several U.S. cities in the aftermath of the George Floyd killing. He talked about communities that were most affected, including Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon, and was interviewed by several dozen outlets from the U.S. and two European countries.
Maguire is co-editor of a compilation of 13 proposed reforms for U.S. police departments, “Transforming the Police,” published earlier this year.
The Design Studio for Community Solutions' Maryvale One Square Mile Initiative enables ASU students and community partners to have meaningful conversations about the neighborhood's needs.
Through social embeddedness, ASU connects with community partners to work on shared goals in order to build stronger and more interconnected communities.
