TechShop Chandler, ASU bring maker movement to students, community

November 19, 2013

TechShop, a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio with locations nationwide, opened its new location to the public in the ASU Chandler Innovation Center on Nov. 16. TechShop will give Arizona State University students and Chandler-area makers and entrepreneurs access to a wide range of machinery, tools and software to turn their ideas into reality.

TechShop has been the birthplace for scores of successful product prototypes, including Square, Embrace, underwater submarine robots, bipedal robot legs and many more.

ASU’s College of Technology and Innovation will offer memberships to students who are taking classes at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center, with discounted memberships available for other faculty and students.

“TechShop creates open access to fabrication and prototyping resources that will enrich the learning experience for our students and the lives of community members,” said Mitzi Montoya, dean of ASU’s College of Technology and Innovation.

The opening of the community workspace at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center marks TechShop’s first academic partnership, following corporate and government partnerships. Anyone can become a member of TechShop Chandler.
