Sun City meets CSI

January 25, 2007

Arizona State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute takes CSI to Sun City when it presents “Biology Behind the Crime Scene.” The multi-series workshop begins March 1 in the Sun City Posse Training Room in Sun City.

ASU’s Janet Painter will discuss the use of biology, genetics and DNA as they relate to criminal investigations. Painter is a faculty associate in the department of Integrated Natural Sciences in the New College of Arts and Interdisciplinary Sciences at ASU's West campus.

“Forensics is currently a very popular topic, as evidenced by the numerous crime scene investigation television shows and films,” Painter said. “This is a great way to investigate what happens behind the scenes. Technology and biology tie together and demonstrate what you can do with information from a crime scene back in the lab.”

Painter has combined her expertise in science, teaching, and theater to create fun, hands-on education workshops for students of all ages. While finishing her doctorate in Physiological and Molecular Plant Biology, she co-produced and hosted “Dr. Janet’s Science Planet” for the University of Illinois’ PBS affiliate. In addition to her university courses, Painter conducts seminars for the ASU Lifelong Learning program as well as “Dr. Janet’s Science Saturdays” family science workshops at ASU’s West campus.

This class is one of nearly 85 classes and lectures being offered in the Sun City communities this spring. For registration and class information, call the Lifelong Learning Academy at Sun City at (602) 377-8390 or visit online at: www.asu.edu/lifelonglearning.
