With two home runs from Mandy Urfer and a complete-game shutout from Dallas Escobedo, the No. 1 Arizona State softball team collected their third Pac-10 series win of the year and second consecutive against defending NCAA champion, UCLA Sunday with a 5-0 win. ASU is now 39-5 overall and 6-3 in Pac-10 play with Escobedo moving to 19-3 on the year. Donna Kerr took the loss to fall to 11-3 on the season while her Bruins drop to 29-9 overall and 5-4 in conference action.
While Escobedo dazzled in the circle, her counterpart. Donna Kerr kept pace through two complete before the Sun Devil offense joined the party as they put one on the board in the third as Mandy Urfer led off the inning with a solo shot to left field and give ASU the 1-0 lead.
It would proved to be all they needed in the outing, but the offense wasn’t in the mood to stop at one as the fourth inning rolled around to see an Annie Lockwood double turn into run number two for ASU with an RBI single fromChristina Zambrana to make it 2-0.
Still not content with just two, the Sun Devils decided to open up a can in the sixth inning as Annie Lockwood got frisky on a 0-1 pitch that she punished for her ninth home run of the season. Mandy Urfer wasn’t to be topped on the day though as Talor Haro laid down a bunt single to bring up the senior slugger who didn’t disappoint as she rocked a 3-1 pitch to right center to make it 5-0 where it would close out with Escobedo remaining untouchable.
The Sun Devils hit the road this weekend as they have their annual ‘Duel In The Desert’ as they travel to Tucson to take on in-state rival, Arizona in a three game series Thursday-Saturday with the winner gaining a point in the State Farm Territorial Cup Series.
