Softball completes weekend series with 14-2 win


Arizona State softball sealed a four-game sweep of Central Connecticut over the weekend with a 14-2 win in five innings, Feb. 26.

Arizona State is now 14-2 on the year and Central Connecticut falls to 0-4. Alix Johnson hit a pair of home runs in the outing to go 3-for-3 with six RBI and three runs scored.

Dallas Escobedo improves to 5-1 after fanning nine opposing batters, giving her a 2.86 ERA on the year for a staff that has a 1.35 ERA overall. Laura Messina garnered the loss for CCSU, falling to 0-2.

Katelyn Boyd got things rolling for the fourth-ranked Sun Devils, belting her fourth homer of the year in the bottom of the first inning. In the third, a catcher’s interference extended play to allow Johnson to hit a three-run home run to center. ASU took a 4-0 lead as Boyd and Elizabeth Caporuscio scored on the hit, unearned.

CCSU battled back to put a run on the board with a home run by Arielle Bruno putting the score at 4-1 heading out of the third.

ASU flexed its offensive muscles in the top of the fifth laying down nine timely hits for 10 runs, giving the Devils a 14-1 lead, leaving it to the defense to hold on for the mercy rule. Johnson tallied her second home run of the day, another three-run long shot, as ASU hit around in the inning with seven different players scoring.

Central Connecticut brought home one more run before all was said and done – Macy Stefanski scored as a bases-loaded walk brought her around in the bottom of the fifth for the final score of 14-2 (5).
