'Smart' TV remote on the horizon

Intel corporation researchers – with the aid of an Arizona State University engineering student – are working on a “smart” remote control to go with the new models of “smart TVs” now in development.

Details of the project were revealed recently in a paper presented at the annual meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.

Among the paper’s authors is Magdiel Galan-Oliveras, who is pursuing a doctoral degree in computer science in the School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering, one of ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

Technology news websites are reporting that he and Intel researchers are experimenting with a remote that can sense the identity of the individual holding the device and prioritize remote-control functions based on the individual’s preferences.
