'Self-healing' material close to reality

A material that can sense when it’s damaged and then repair itself may soon no longer be merely science fiction.

Research at Arizona State University led by Henry Sodano is making strides in developing a material that might allow damaged cars, airplanes, bridges – even satellites – to “self heal,” or significantly limit damage, in much the same way the human body does when it’s cut.

Sodano is an associate professor in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, one of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU.

He says the full breakthrough in this technological advance may be just a few years away.

His work has been reported on by CNN and ABC News in Phoenix (link below).
