Makoski named to the U.S. U-21 National Team


ormer Sun Devil Manya Makoski has been named to the U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team as announced by head coach Bill Irwin. The team will travel to Vassa, Finland, on July 12 for the 2007 Nordic Cup tournament, being held from July 18-24. This will be Makoski's fourth time competing for the U.S. National Team.

The USA has won eight Nordic Cup titles, including seven in a row before falling last year in the championship game to Germany. The USA won the last Nordic Cup contested in Finland in 2002, defeating Germany, 3-1 in the final.

Makoski was a four-year starter for the Sun Devil soccer team and made her mark not only on the program but the conference. She was named All-Pac-10 Conference four times, earning first team honors as a junior and second team honors three times. On the national scene, she was twice selected to the Soccer Buzz All-West Region team, earning first team in 2004 and second team in 2002. She also was a finalist for the Soccer Buzz National Freshman of the Year award after earning Freshman All-America honors from Soccer America. In her career, she ranks second all-time at ASU with 22 assists and prowess for finding the back of the net ranks her fifth all-time in goals scored with 24 and third in game-winning goals with nine. She also ranks fifth with 70 career points, making her just the fifth player to reach the 70-point plateau in a career at ASU. On the season lists, she ranks fifth in game-winning goals scored in a season with three in 2004 while her nine assists as a freshman ranks as the most in a single-season by a Sun Devil player.

The American women open play against Norway on July 18 in Närpiö, followed by the match against Sweden on July 22 in Vaasa.
