Law professor comments on 'sovereign citizen' movement

Professor Paul Bender was quoted in a recent ABC15 article, ‘Sovereign Citizens’ claim freedom from Arizona, federal laws.’

The article, by Dan Siegel, discusses a number of Arizona residents who are filing paperwork to become “sovereign,” trying to declare themselves U.S. Nationals rather than U.S. citizens because they don’t like taxes and don’t like the government telling them what to do.

Bender told Siegel that there is potential danger in citizens declaring themselves immune from government.

“I cannot imagine what their legal arguments are that have any coherence whatsoever,” Bender was quoted as saying. “It would mean there’d be total anarchy.”
