Invest in your health at Employee Wellness Fair

January 05, 2012

Making an investment in your health is one of the smartest things that faculty and staff can do as the New Year begins.

Arizona State University is making it easy for employees to screen their health, commit to getting in shape and possibly win a few prizes in the process during the Employee Wellness Fair, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jan. 18, at the Student Recreation Complex Maroon Gym.

Resources from throughout the university as well as outside vendors will offer services such as blood-pressure screenings, massage, nutrition information, cholesterol level measurements, vision tests and oral hygiene evaluations. Additional screenings available at the fair include diabetes, bone density, skin analysis, spinal scans and body mass index. (Please bring your ASU Sun Card for screenings.)

“I think a lot of times people do not take their own health into account. They get busy and taking care of themselves ends up at the bottom of the list,” said Jillian McManus, ASU Director of Organizational Health and Development. “It’s a great time at the beginning of the year to say – New Year, new me.”

Drawings for prizes will also be featured at the event including Student Recreation Complex memberships, gift cards, dinners and services from participating vendors. If you’re curious about what the Student Recreation Complex offers, plan on stopping by the fair to learn about exercise options available there such as swimming, treadmills, basketball, tennis, racquetball, yoga, fitness classes, weight training and much more.

“Many faculty and staff members make working out part of their daily routine, whether it’s over the lunch hour or before or after work. It makes a tremendous difference in how someone feels and it’s incredibly convenient to work out where you work,” said Tamra Garstka, director of Campus Recreation.

Employees can also learn more about office ergonomics, campus safety, smoking cessation and the ASU Farmers Market.

ASU’s employee discount program, The Employee Network, is also featured at the fair. The network is Arizona’s largest employee discount program, offering discounts on theme park tickets, home services, health and wellness, automotive services and more.
