Engineering prof selected as U.S. EPA adviser

<p>Paul Westerhoff, interim director of the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, a part of ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, has been appointed to a three-year term on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board.</p><separator></separator><p>Board members provide expertise on technical issues to help guide the agency in policy-making and decision-making.</p><separator></separator><p>The role can include reviewing the quality and relevance of the scientific and technical information being used or proposed as the basis for regulations; reviewing guidelines governing the use of scientific and technical information in regulatory decisions; and advising the agency on broad scientific matters in science, technology, social and economic issues, as well as on emergency matters.</p><separator></separator><p>Westerhoff is a leader in the water quality and treatment field. He has earned recognition for the quality of his recent research on the environmental implications of nanotechnology and studies of inorganic and organic contaminants in water.</p><separator></separator><p>He has received leading research awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Water Environment Federation. He has made more than 200 presentations at engineering and science conferences during his career.</p><separator></separator><p>Westerhoff came to ASU in 1995 and became a full professor in 2007.</p><separator></separator><p>He earned a bachelor's degree from Lehigh University, a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a doctorate from the University of Colorado-Boulder.</p>
