Deer Valley Rock Art Center a 'Best of Phoenix' pick

December 30, 2008

Every year, New Times releases a special edition dedicated to recognizing excellence throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area. Known as the “Best of Phoenix” issue, the guide lists what New Times staff deem, among other things, the best places to dine, visit, shop and be entertained. This year’s Best of Phoenix issue — the 30th annual edition — features Deer Valley Rock Art Center as the “Best Will Bruder Building No One Knows About.”

Run by ASU’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change, the Deer Valley Rock Art Center is a museum, nature preserve and archaeological site boasting over 1,500 petroglyphs. The museum – a sleek dark building that seems camouflaged against the surrounding Hedgpeth Hills—was designed by noted architect Will Bruder and constructed in the 1990s.
