ASU is hosting major conference that looks at a new approach to science

Tempe, Ariz., September 29, 2015 – Arizona State University is hosting the international Conference on Complex Systems this week. The conference is being held in North America for the first time in 14 years after previously being held in locations throughout Europe. A truly global event, ASU complexity scientists are representing the best of ASU transdisciplinary research and also the best in complexity science in the U.S.  The study of complex systems represents a new approach to science, investigating how the relationship between parts of a system gives rise to collective behaviors, and how the system interacts with its environment.   

This year, the Complex Systems Society is honoring Maxi San Miguel with the CSS Senior Scientist Award. The scientific researcher and director of the Institute of Cross-disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (joint research center of the University of the Balearic Islands and the Spanish Research Council), is being recognized for his professional career and cross-disciplinary studies of the foundations of Complex Systems.

According to CSS, “Maxi San Miguel has been a key player in the cross-disciplinary research of complex systems and a source of inspiration in the transfer of knowledge to define new lines of research beyond traditional fields.” San Miguel is a highly distinguished doctor of physics, Director of IFISC (the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems), and has been a professor at the University of les Illes Balears since 1986. He has most recently studied human and urban mobility.

The conference is focusing on seven tracks across disciplines including economics and finance, biological complexity and information and communications technology, among others.

The five day conference, being held in conjunction with the Sante Fe Institute and the Complex Systems Society, is taking place at the Doubletree Hilton in Tempe, AZ with 600 people attending. For more information visit the conference website.
