Baseball splits series with BYU


<p>A late inning comeback would come up short on Tuesday night in Tempe, as the Sun Devils fell to BYU 6-4. The Devils trailed 6-1 one before a three-run eighth inning, but they could not complete the comeback, dropping to 32-11 on the season.</p><separator></separator><p>BYU starter Blake Torgerson kept the ASU hitters off balance for his 6.1 innings, allowing only one run on seven hits to earn his first win of the season. For ASU, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/blackford_alex00.html"… Blackford</a> (4-1) suffered from three unearned runs in his five innings. He allowed five runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.</p><separator></separator><p>The Cougars took the lead on a two-run double by Austin Hall in the fourth inning. They added three more in the fifth, all unearned after two errors by third baseman <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/demichele_joey00.html"… DeMichele</a>, then added another in the top of the sixth to go ahead 6-0.</p><separator></separator><p><a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/wilson_zach00.html">Za… Wilson</a> got the Devils on the board with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth then ASU would add three more in the bottom of the eighth. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/newman_matt00.html">Ma… Newman</a> brought two home with a single to center and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/aplin_andrew00.html">A… Aplin</a> scored Newman with his own single to center.</p><separator></separator><p>But that was as close as ASU would get, as BYU's Desmond Poulson kept the Devils off the scoreboard in the ninth to earn his first save of the season. ASU returns to action on Friday night, as they host Long Beach State in the first game of a three-game non-conference series.
