Baseball rallies past OSU, completes series sweep


The 23rd-ranked Arizona State baseball team scored five runs in the eighth inning to win, 5-1, and complete the series sweep over No. 17 Oregon State, April 7, in front of 2,622 fans at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

James McDonald drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single up the middle and Max Rossiter followed with a three-run home run to left field to complete the Devils' (19-12, 6-6) late-game rally.

Right-hander Robert Ravago (3-0) earned the win after pitching the back-end of the seventh and all of the eighth, giving up no runs and no hits to go with two strikeouts.

Right-hander Darin Gillies threw three scoreless innings before giving up a leadoff double and an RBI single in the first two at-bats of the fourth inning. Left-hander Matt Dunbar replaced Gillies in the frame with runners on second and third and no outs, and retired the next three batters to keep the Devils' deficit at one.

The Beavers (18-11, 6-6) scored their only run of the game of an RBI single in the fourth inning by Jake Rodriguez.

Abe Ruiz added an RBI single in the eighth inning, scoring Andrew Aplin, who led off the frame with a base hit to right field.

Left-hander Jace Fry (2-2) took the loss after giving up three earned runs on seven hits.

The Sun Devils travel to New Mexico for a midweek series in Albuquerque, N.M., on April 9 and 10. Monday's game is set for a 6 p.m. (MT) start, while Tuesday's will begin at 7 p.m. (MT). Tim Healey and Seth Dhaenens will broadcast both games live on KDUS The Fan Am 1060, and Tuesday's game will be broadcast live by CBS College Sports.

Game notes: In the past two seasons, ASU is 6-0 against the Oregon teams in Arizona, and 0-6 against the Oregon teams in Oregon...right-hander Jake Barrett closed out the ninth inning and right-hander Joseph Lopez threw 1/3 inning in the seventh.
