Back to school: campus life in pictures By Lisa Robbins | August 22, 2014 ASU's Tempe campus was bursting with activity as students made their way along Cady Mall, located near Hayden Library and the Memorial Union. Many students expressed excitement for the fall semester. Take a look at what some had to say. Students get their bearings as they navigate the Tempe campus on the first day of school. The first Walk Only Zones were created last fall to enhance pedestrian safety and to ease vehicle congestion. To learn more, visit: walk.asu.edu. Students cross in front of Fletcher Library on the West campus as they make their way to class. Friends hang out between classes on ASU's West campus. Many students choose the West campus for its smaller, liberal arts college feel. This year, the campus saw an enrollment growth of 385 new freshmen. Keeping up with a long-standing ASU tradition, the freshman class hiked up "A" Mountain Aug. 23 to whitewash the giant letter that marks the Tempe landmark just north of campus. Kristen Gallegos, a freshman psychology major from West Covina, California, isn't afraid to get her hands dirty during the whitewashing event. The current "A" is made of reinforced steel and poured concrete and measures 60 feet from base to top. Kaelen Jones, a freshman journalism major (center), takes part in the whitewashing fun. The whitewashing tradition began in the 1930s as part of orientation and continues to this day during Welcome Week, indicating the commencement of another academic year at ASU. The Sun Devils storm the field with Coach Todd Graham to kick off the 2014 fall season against Weber State. The student section - known as the Inferno - was awash with gold as they cheered for their team.
