ASU, Tempe Fire to stage lab evacuation exercise
Arizona State University’s Environmental Health & Safety department will be staging a mock lab evacuation in conjunction with the ASU Police Department and Tempe Fire Department on June 30.
The drill will take place on the Tempe campus at the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 1 (ISTB 1). Orange Street in front of the building will be closed during the exercise from 7 to 10 p.m.
“Environmental Health & Safety and Student Media at ASU are producing a CSI-style video to enhance the learning experience for employees who attend the laboratory safety class. The video portrays a laboratory accident and demonstrates proper methods to prevent such incidents,” said Michael Ochs, Environmental Health and Safety manager.
ASU students, faculty and staff who would like to participate in the exercise can meet at the ISTB 1 building at 7:30 p.m. on the day of the exercise where they’ll be given instructions on taking part in the mock evacuation. Refreshments will be available for volunteers.
Environmental Health and Safety is producing the video in conjunction with Student Media to supplement a lab safety course that is required for all ASU personnel who work in any academic, clinical or research lab with hazardous chemicals.
