ASU offers new scholarship for military students
Arizona State University is introducing the Military Active Duty and Reservist Commitment Scholarship for undergraduate military students enrolled in an online degree program.
The scholarship will benefit students using military Tuition Assistance by covering the remaining cost of tuition per credit hour, meaning eligible military students will no longer have out-of-pocket tuition expenses to attend ASU online.
“With the addition of this scholarship, we are honored to expand our commitment to those serving our country and to provide them with the opportunity to receive a world-class education while stationed here and abroad,” said University Provost Robert E. Page Jr. “Arizona State University recognizes the unique lifestyle of our military, and we are committed to meeting the needs of military families as they work to complete their education.”
The scholarship will be available to all online students utilizing TA benefits beginning with the start of the 2015 Spring B session on March 16.
“When starting school, I was worried about how I would be able to cover the cost of tuition that was not covered by my military benefits,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Alyssa Wright. “I knew I wanted to attend ASU, and would do whatever it took to make that happen, but this scholarship really took all my worries away financially.”
Having joined the United States Navy almost nine years ago, Wright, a sophomore, knew she wanted to earn a degree in political science to accompany her military job training, and was honored to find out that ASU offered this scholarship to military members.
“Our service women and men willingly volunteer to serve our nation in its most difficult moments, and put their lives on the line so that we might enjoy our freedoms," said retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley, who is the special adviser to the president for leadership initiatives at ASU. "Therefore, it is our duty to provide our full support for veterans and active military as they look to continue their education. Our scholarship reflects the commitment of Arizona State University to honor those who serve and have served."
