ASU nutrition program hosts summer camp for local kids

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. AHA also reports childhood obesity is now the number one health concern among parents in the United States.

With an aim to tackle these issues head-on, students and employees in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University have partnered with the Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s Kohl’s FIT program to present the 2nd Annual Camp CRAVE, a unique summer camp dedicated to teaching kids how to live healthier lives.

Camp CRAVE is an interactive summer camp that combines food, fun and fitness, and is open to children in grades 4-6. Each day of the weeklong session includes nutrition and food culture topics, exciting fitness activities, as well as basic cooking instruction and an exposure to unique foods in a real kitchen setting on ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus.

Four one-week sessions will be offered throughout June and July. Lunch is provided each day. Registration is required by May 26th, as each session accommodates a maximum of 20 students.

Camp CRAVE details:

Four 1-week sessions Monday-Friday

June 9-13, Basic skills camp
June 16-20, Advanced skills camp
June 23-27, Basic skills camp
July 7-11, Advanced skills camp

The advanced camp sessions build upon skills the child has learned in a basic camp session. It is highly recommended campers attend a basic camp session prior to an advanced session.

$75.00 for each session
