ASU may share $84M complex with Chicago Cubs
Arizona State and the Chicago Cubs are discussing the possibility of a shared practice and game space at the Cubs' new spring training complex in Mesa beginning 2014.
In a recent article, Arizona Republic reporter Jeff Metcalfe writes:
"The Cubs approached ASU about sharing the $84 million complex, which was approved in November by Mesa voters and will be constructed on the site of the current Riverview Golf Course, roughly five miles east of the university.
"Virgil Renzulli, ASU vice president for public affairs, said the cost to the school is estimated at $2 million to $25 million to rebuild Packard Stadium, home to the Sun Devils since 1974. Tempe Diablo and Phoenix Municipal stadiums also have been discussed as possible ASU options for a new baseball home."
ASU Vice President for Athletics Lisa Love wrote in an email, Tuesday, to baseball season-ticket holders: "Any partnership that we would develop would be one that would enhance our program in a manner to produce championship results."
Metcalfe highlighted that ASU is a five-time College World Series champion.
