ASU leads the way in data-assisted education


A recent article published by The Chronicle of Higher Education highlighted ASU's efforts in data-assisted education, including the degree-monitoring system employed by the university to keep students on track in their majors.

"Under Arizona State's eAdvisor system – in use since 2008-9 and based on a similar effort at the University of Florida – students must pick a major in their freshman year and follow a plan that lays out when to take key courses," writes Marc Parry for the Chronicle. He explained that ASU's system has resulted in a rentention rate of 84 percent, up from 77 percent in recent years.

"By putting those courses first, you can see if a student is going to succeed in that major early," said University Provost and Executive Vice President Elizabeth Capaldi.
