ASU Homecoming hits Tempe this weekend

October 14, 2013

Cue up the marching band and put the finishing touches on the floats because Homecoming at Arizona State University is taking place this Saturday, Oct. 19, and the community is invited to join the celebration.

This year’s theme is “All that Glitters is Gold,” and rightfully so. More than 80 floats and 100 booths will be on site showcasing the sprit, pride and tradition that all four campuses have to offer.

The parade will make its way down University Drive at 11 a.m., with alumnus Joe Caldwell serving as the grand marshal. The block party will then kick off at noon with exciting events for the whole family.

Visitors to the Alumni Association's area at the block party can stop by to get an autograph from members of the Ring of Honor society, snap a picture of themselves in a gold-themed photo booth or bring their families to participate in children's activities with Sun Devil Generations. The 2013 Ring of Honor inductees are running back Leon Burton, defensive back Mike Richardson and defensive lineman Al Harris.

In the Kidz Zone, the Biodesign Institute has prepared a glitter-filled experiment that teaches kids how germs spread using glitter and lotion. Sun Devil Athletics will have student-athletes signing autographs and supervising fun inflatables. Other activities include a dunk tank and Club ASU passports.

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts will host a series of performers, including ASU’s very own string trio, Simply Three. The Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies is set to have sword fighters and renaissance performers on hand. Block party attendees can also look forward to Indian fry bread, interactive displays, puzzles, the PBS Nerd Walk and much more.

The excitement will lead up to the ASU vs. Washington football game at 3 p.m., in Sun Devil Stadium. Tickets are still available for purchase online by calling the Sun Devil Ticket Office at 480-727-0000.

Parking lots and structures on the northern portion of campus (north of University Drive) are open five hours prior to kickoff for prepaid season ticket parking passes, and cash lots are open three hours before kickoff.
