Alums named as initial qualifiers for 2012 U.S. Olympic trials
USA Wrestling Official Release
Two former Arizona State University wrestling student-athletes were named to the initial list of 65 qualifiers for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials for Wrestling on April 21-22, 2012 in Iowa City, Iowa, as announced by USA Wrestling on Thursday.
Danny Felix, a member of the Sun Devil roster from 1994-98, earned a qualification in the 55kg freestyle by nature of winning the 2009 U.S. Team Trials and advancing to the 2009 World Championships.
Kelsey Campbell, who was a member of the ASU team from 2008-09 and is the only woman ever on an ASU roster, earned a qualification for the women’s freestyle trials at 55kg. Campbell was fifth at the 2010 World Championships in her weight class, earning the qualification to the U.S. Olympics Trials.
Each of the three Olympic styles of wrestling will have a different qualification process, as proposed by their individual Sports Committees, presented by USA Wrestling and approved by the USOC. Athletes who have already qualified include past U.S. World and Olympic team members, thus the qualifications for Felix and Campbell.
Felix was an All-American for the Sun Devils in 1995 at 118 pounds, finishing seventh overall. Campbell never competed for Arizona State but was a member of the roster.
There will be more opportunities for competitors to qualify for the U.S. Trials over the coming months and should any notable Sun Devils make the cut, you will be the first to know if you continue to follow Arizona State Wrestling at TheSunDevils.com.
