Lauryn Burr graduates this fall from ASU FIDM with a BA in fashion and her sights set on a career as a fashion stylist.
“I’ve always known I wanted to be in fashion,” Burr said. “I was making dresses and styling my Barbies as a kid. I was putting my mom’s shoes on the moment I could walk and loved to put outfits together when I was younger.”
In addition to her current job as an assistant to a seamstress, Burr is already getting jobs as a stylist.
“I love helping people find their style and see new ways to style something and making them feel confident in themselves,” she said. “I actually recently styled one of my favorite singers, Zinadelphia, for her Phoenix show. She has a 60s aesthetic, and it was so fun finding things that fit that and to see her onstage wearing what I got her.”
Burr, who was born and raised in Arizona and attends ASU FIDM at its Phoenix location, said she would eventually love to expand her business to Los Angeles — one of the fashion capitals of the world and ASU FIDM’s second location.
“I plan to stay here and build my clientele in the Phoenix area for now,” said the Arizona-based student. “I'd love to live in LA and work as a stylist there.”
Last year Burr got the chance to visit Los Angeles as part of ASU FIDM’s inaugural bus trip between its two locations. Burr joined 39 other Phoenix-based students on a three-day, two night fashion-centric trip to LA to experience ASU FIDM in LA.
“It definitely was a highlight of my time at ASU,” she said. “It was so fun to get to explore LA and also tour the ASU California Center. We also were stopped on the street on that trip to be in an American Vogue photoshoot with celebrity Ayo Edebiri, which was such a surreal experience. One of my friends did get cut out, but the photo did make it into the magazine (in print and online).”
Q: What’s something you learned while at ASU — in the classroom or otherwise — that surprised you or changed your perspective?
A: Always take a step back to look at your work. It’s so easy to get lost in your work and lose sight of your vision. Take a breath, a walk or whatever you need to do, and then come back to look at your work with a new set of eyes.
Q: Which professor taught you the most important lesson while at ASU?
A: Irina Tevzadze has been my favorite teacher and always stresses the importance of taking time for yourself to refuel. It’s crucial to staying creative and keeping your mind clear.
Q: What has been one of your favorite projects or courses while a student at ASU FIDM and why?
A: I loved Fashion Illustration II with Irina Tevzadze. She’s an incredible artist and teacher. I absolutely loved learning from her and seeing how she could draw a perfect croquis in seconds.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to those still in school?
A: Make friends and memories every chance you get. Every semester will be different and life gets crazy, but make time to be with your friends, meet new people and make memories.
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: I don’t have immediate plans for after graduation. I currently work as an assistant to a seamstress, and I’ve loved my job and am learning a lot, so I’d love to stay there for a bit. I want to be a stylist, so I will continue to build a clientele and see where that takes me!
Q: If someone gave you $40 million to solve one problem on our planet, what would you tackle?
A: As fashion is the third most polluting industry in the world, I would want to use that money to figure out how to be more sustainable. Whether that was recycling garments in the landfill, cleaning the garments and giving them to those in need or reusing the materials to create new items, or if it were to create more sustainable practices and help reduce the amount of pollution and waste the industry leaves.
