Two dynamic Arizona State University units are partnering to offer a career boost for health care professionals.

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and the College of Health Solutions have teamed up to present a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt for Health Care Professionals course. The course, which starts Oct. 18, has been approved for continuing education units toward the Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality certification.

Jeffrey Goss, assistant dean, executive director and associate vice provost of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, said the course represented a valuable partnership between the two units.

“The Fulton Schools of Engineering is proud to be partnered with the College of Health Solutions, as it underscores our commitment to high-quality operational excellence certifications and training,” Goss said. “Together, we are equipping health care professionals with the essential Lean Six Sigma Green Belt tools, fostering a culture of efficiency and quality that will ultimately enhance patient care and drive positive outcomes in health care delivery."

According to the American Society for Quality’s 2022 Quality Progress Survey, professionals who have completed any level of Six Sigma training earn approximately $17,000 more per year on average than those who have not completed any Six Sigma training.

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Health Care Certification is a 10-week course designed to combine techniques from Lean and Six Sigma to improve processes and reduce waste. The program costs $1,950, and there are 10% returning student and group discounts available.

Kristen Will, assistant dean of clinical programs and accreditation with the College of Health Solutions, commented on the value of this training.

“Health care is a complex and fragmented system,” said Will, who also has 25 years of experience as a physician assistant. “With a Green Belt Certification in Lean Six Sigma, health care professionals may work as system engineers to improve the system, making health care safer with higher-quality and ultimately better health outcomes.”
