As part of ASU's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, ASU Wind Bands launches their 2022–23 season on Sept. 15 at ASU Gammage with a concert featuring composers representing Argentina, Colombia, Cuba and Mexico.
Joining them on stage are students from ASU Dance, CONDER|dance and Grupo BombAZo, a collective of Phoenix-based musicians.
“The focus of this year’s concert season is collaboration,” said Jason Caslor, director of bands at ASU.
In addition to connecting with fellow musicians in two public high schools though joint concerts, Caslor said the wind bands have planned on-campus collaborations with ASU Dance, ASU Theatre, The Sidney Poitier New American Film School, the ASU Composition Studio and the ASU Choral Program.
Other guest artists joining them this year include composer Shuying Li, conductors Gillian MacKay and Leah McGray, and ASU faculty Nathan De'Shon Myers (baritone), Joe Burgstaller (trumpet), Brad Edwards (trombone) and Albie Micklich (bassoon).
“We are always looking for ways to bring guest artists to campus that will inspire and share their unique perspectives with our student musicians,” said Jamal Duncan, ASU’s associate director of bands.
“We also think it is important to showcase the incredibly talented artists in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre,” Caslor said. “Sharing the stage with them is always a privilege.”
October sees the ASU Chamber Winds and the Maroon and Gold Band at the Madison Center for the Arts to present music that ranges from intimate chamber music to repertoire requiring a large concert band. November has the Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble at ASU Gammage for an evening inspired by the works of William Shakespeare, Langston Hughes and Nina Simone. The Wind Symphony glides into Thanksgiving with DMA conducting student Dylan Maddix’s recital that fittingly focuses on the theme of "home."
Spring concerts include “Hollywood!” in January, Paul Hindemith’s epic “Symphony in Bb” in February, a side-by-side with Tempe High School in March and an April performance of David Maslanka’s “Traveler.” The Wind Symphony and Maroon and Gold Band close the season in late April celebrating the successes and accomplishments of the students.
