John Quiñones is Delivering Democracy 2022 distinguished speaker

Arizona State University's Center for the Study of Race and Democracy will feature John Quiñones — a trailblazing Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, first-generation college graduate, writer, producer and author — in its dynamic, livestreamed Delivering Democracy program at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 23.

Quiñones is a deeply admired and fearless journalist whose pathbreaking career has underscored the power of diverse voices and the far-reaching implications of the American dream. Known and deeply respected for his more than 30-year career at ABC News and his role as anchor for the programs "20/20" and "Primetime," Quiñones has paved the way for countless journalists and broadcasters. He has broken barriers in and beyond the workplace, won the highest accolades and recognition from his peers and professional community, and become a true exhorter and role model for many in and beyond the United States.   

A native of San Antonio, Texas, whose family has lived in the United States for six generations, Quiñones’ early life included travelling with his family to work alongside migrant farmworkers in Michigan and Ohio. Quiñones was admitted to an Upward Bound program at his Texas high school, and from that moment forward, his academic journey gained substantial momentum. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree in speech communication, and earned his master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.   

Each year, Delivering Democracy provides a platform for visionary speakers to discuss democracy and issues of race, justice and engagement with the local community, a national audience and beyond. Delivering Democracy 2022 will be a livestreamed event that draws audiences from across the globe. As a livestreamed program, Delivering Democracy 2022 enables conversation and connection despite the uncertainties that so many are facing at this time. 

Delivering Democracy 2022, like the annual programs in years past, will provide opportunities for powerful engagement and spirited dialogue with communities across the nation and the world. The livestream program will feature a dialogue between Quiñones and Lois Brown, director of the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy and Foundation Professor of English.
