Wrestling edged by Central Oklahoma at Lone Star Duals

<p>The 2011 Lone Star Duals came to a close for the Arizona State University wrestling team on Saturday night in Grand Prairie, Texas, with the Sun Devils dropping their third dual in a row on the day in a close 23-22 loss to Central Oklahoma, the ninth-ranked team in NCAA Division II. The two teams split the 10 matches, but two forfeits surrendered by the Sun Devils because of injury proved to be costly in the team standings as ASU slipped to 5-7 on the year.</p><separator></separator><p><a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/robles_anthony00.html"… Robles</a> (125), <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/edwards_te00.html">Te Edwards</a> (165), <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/meredith_jake00.html">… Meredith</a> (184), <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/macchiaroli_luke00.htm… Macchiaroli</a> (197) and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/cooper_levi00.html">Le… Cooper</a> (heavyweight) each collected wins, including four that produced bonus points, to lead the team with all but Edwards going 4-0 on the day (Edwards was 3-1). Robles finished the day with four technical fall victories and having not surrendered a point to an opponent while Meredith (three), Macchiaroli (one) and Cooper (four) all posted bonus point wins on the day.</p><separator></separator><p>The dual opened at 125 with Robles, ranked No. 2 nationally, scoring a 15-0 technical fall over Zach Housley for a 5-0 team lead. Robles, who outscored his foes 62-0 on the day, moved into 15th all-time in ASU history with his 108th career win and also stands 17th in career dual victories with 47. His technical fall win was his 15th this year and helped him improve to 21-0.</p><separator></separator><p>From there, however, the Bronchos shot into a big lead by winning four matches in a row, to move ahead, 17-5. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/prado_david00.html">Da… Prado</a> fell in a 10-3 decision to the eighth-ranked (Division II) Trison Graham at 133 before <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/goodsite_kalin00.html"… Goodsite</a> lost a 20-4 technical fall to Ky Corley at 141. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/fukumoto_tai00.html">T… Fukumoto</a> lost a close 4-0 decision at 149 to Austin Standage before Cory Dauphin (Division II No. 7) won by forfeit at 157.</p><separator></separator><p>Edwards was up next at 165 and won a 16-4 major decision over fourth-ranked (Division II) Derrick Adkins, cutting the deficit to eight points (17-9). The win pushed Edwards to 3-1 on the day with his lone loss coming in the dual with American in a 13-7 decision to No. 1 (at 157) Steve Fittery. After Edwards’ win, ASU gave up six points for a forfeit at 174, putting UCO ahead, 23-9, with three matches remaining.</p><separator></separator><p>Needing to secure at least 14 points to tie the score, the Sun Devils were only able to score 13 over the last three matches, staring with six points from Meredith at 184 as he pinned Kelly Henderson in 1:03. Macchiaroli added three points as he won a tough 2-0 decision over the fifth-ranked (Division II) Jarrett Edison at 197, setting up the final match at heavyweight where Cooper would need a technical fall to tie and a pin to win. Although he tried to get either of those wins, he came up short, winning a 19-7 major decision to leave ASU one point shy.</p><separator></separator><p>Despite the close loss in the team standings, the two heaviest Sun Devils have had a strong showing in the past several events. In the last two weeks, Macchiaroli is 6-1 with only a 10-3 loss to No. 5 Dustin Kilgore (Kent State) at the Virginia Duals as the lone blemish in that time. Similarly, Cooper is 11-2 in his last 13 matches, dating back to the first round of the Reno Tournament of Champions, an event he won. In that span, Cooper has won four major decisions, two falls and one forfeit while suffering a 4-3 decision and a 12-4 major decision to ranked foes.</p><separator></separator><p>After two weekends in a row in which the team competed in three or more duals each time, the Sun Devils will now slow it down as classes resume this week, facing only CS Bakersfield in a Pac-10 dual inside Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe at 7 p.m. Friday night. The dual is the first of the last two home duals of the year and the first of the last two opportunities for fans to see seniors Robles and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/jenkins_bubba00.html">… Jenkins</a> wrestle at home in their collegiate campaigns.</p><separator></separator><p><strong>#9 (D2) Central Oklahoma def.
