Water polo loses close match to California


<p>The ninth-ranked women's water polo team fell to No. 3 California 14-11 April 3 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. Junior attacker <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-wpolo/mtt/harris_sarah00.html">Sa… Harris</a> scored five goals to pace the Sun Devils (15-10, 0-5 MPSF) in their fifth MPSF match of the season.</p><separator></separator><p>ASU gave up three goals to the Golden Bears in the first four minutes of the match before sophomore attacker <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-wpolo/mtt/white_kelsey00.html">Ke… White</a> found the back of the net on a power play to get the Sun Devils on the board. Cal added three more scores to end the opening quarter with a 6-1 lead.</p><separator></separator><p>Led by a pair of goals from Harris, the Sun Devils outscored Cal 5-3 in the second frame to begin their comeback. Senior center <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-wpolo/mtt/walsh_kari00.html">Kari Walsh</a>, and attackers sophomore <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-wpolo/mtt/carter_annabelle00.html… Carter</a> and junior <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-wpolo/mtt/smith_lynlee00.html">Ly… Smith</a> each netted a goal to close ASU's deficit to three at halftime.</p><separator></separator><p>The Sun Devils came out firing in the third quarter as freshman center <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-wpolo/mtt/haas_shannon00.html">Sh… Haas</a> scored just 21 seconds into the frame and Harris added a goal two minutes later. Senior center <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-wpolo/mtt/phelps_kelly00.html">Ke… Phelps</a> scored her 120th career goal with just over four minutes remaining in the quarter to bring ASU to within one. Harris completed the rally with her fourth goal of the game and tied the match at 10 apiece with 2:43 left in the third. Cal added a score in the final minute to give the Bears a one-goal advantage heading into the final period.</p><separator></separator><p>Harris tied the match at 11 in the opening minute, but the Sun Devils allowed three goals in the fourth frame and lost the tightly contested battle, 14-11.</p><separator></separator><p>Sophomore goalie <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-wpolo/mtt/harvey_dana00.html">Dana Harvey</a> made her 12th start of the weekend and finished with 10 saves in four quarters of play.
