Tennis Devils wrap up Freeman Memorial


The Arizona State women’s tennis team wrapped up their last day of play at the Freeman Memorial Tournament on Sunday.

The Sun Devils fell short in their doubles semifinals matches. Senior Ashlee Brown and junior Sianna Simmons lost to McCall Jones and Maya Johansson of UCLA, 8-1. Seniors Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein, who were ranked second overall in the tournament, succumbed to Maria Sanchez and Kaitlyn Christian of USC, 8-5.

The women won all but two of their consolation matches. Sophomore Hannah James took on Laura Slater of UNC, defeating her 6-4, 6-4. Simmons won against Elizabeth Ecker of Stanford, 6-1, 6-4. Senior Michelle Brycki swept Lauren McHale of UNC, 6-1, 6-4. McKenna triumphed over Alex Cercone of Florida in two tough sets, 7-5, 6-4. Brown lost to Jelena Durisic of UNC 6-3, 6-4. Hein fell to Jo Mather of Florida, 6-2, 6-2.

The Devils will return to Arizona and face Iowa State on Jan. 21 at the Whiteman Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m.
