Sun Devils rout Anteaters
Sybil Dosty had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Arizona State held Cal-Irvine to a record low in scoring for a 75-23 victory Saturday in the first round of the ASU Classic.
The Sun Devils (5-2) will play Northern Arizona at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in the championship game of the 2008 ASU Classic. The Lumberjacks defeated Hawaii 61-58 in Saturday's second game.
The 23 points are the fewest Arizona State has ever allowed, breaking the previous low of 30 by Grand Canyon on Dec. 4, 1992 and matched by Washington State on Feb. 21 of last season. It is also the fewest points scored against a Pac-10 team, breaking the mark of 24 Cal-Irvine had against Oregon State on Dec. 9, 1989.
Rebecca Maessen led the Anteaters (3-3) with 10 points. Mary Has, Cal-Irvine's leading scorer, was held scoreless on 0-of-9 shooting from the field before she fouled out with 6:26 left. She came into the game averaging 17.2 points.
Dymond Simon added 10 points and five assists for Arizona State, and Lauren Lacey had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Sunday's championship game can be heard live on The Fan AM 1060. Pre-game coverage will begin at 2 p.m. Following Sunday's championship game, Hawaii and IC Irvine will square off in the consolation game (approx. 5 p.m.).
