January 24, 2009

Dymond Simon scored 19 points, making 3-of-4 3-pointers, to lead Arizona State past in-state rival Arizona 75-38 in Pac-10 play Saturday, the Sun Devils' fifth straight win.

Ify Ibekwe, the conference's second-leading scorer at 15.8 points a game, had 13 points for Arizona, which has lost all seven of its conference games since starting the season 7-4.

Briann January, who made 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, added 16 points and seven assists for the Sun Devils (13-6, 5-2 Pac-10) while the Wildcats (7-11, 0-7) suffered their most lopsided loss of the season. The 38 points matched the lowest scoring game of the season.

Arizona fell behind early after missing its first 10 shots of the game, trailing 10-0 after seven minutes. The Wildcats made just 6-of-28 field goals in the first half and trailed 29-12 at the break, the lowest scoring output for a half all season.

Arizona State started slow itself, missing nine of its first 13 shots but scored 10 quick points - keyed by 3-pointers from Simon and Briann January -- over a two-minute stretch to take a 20-6 lead with 8:53 left.

The Sun Devils scored the first six points of the second half to hold the momentum and led by as much as 41 in the second half. Arizona finished the afternoon 14-of-52 (27 percent) from the field.

Ibekwe, who is also the Pac-10's leading rebounder at 12.3 a game, was held to 4-of-13 shooting and six boards.

Arizona State has beaten Arizona seven straight times, dating back to the 2005-06 season, and nine of the last 10.

Sybil Dosty added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Sun Devils.
