Softball beats Cal Poly again

March 28, 2010

Box Score

A dominating 2-for-3 performance with a double and a home run from Mandy Urfer helped lead the No. 8 ASU Softball team to a 13-5 (5) win Sunday afternoon over the Cal Poly Mustangs. Megan Elliott took the win for the Sun Devils, pushing her record to 11-1 while ASU holds at 31-4 headed into Pac-10 play.

A perfect first inning from Megan Elliott brought up the Sun Devil bats, who rallied up to hit around the order while pasting a whopping nine runs on the board with five hits, one of which was a three-RBI double to right center off the first pitch she saw from Anna Cahn.

Cahn got a slice of revenge back in the second inning as she dug in to launch a solo shot to left center off a full count which her fellow Mustangs followed up with four more hits to bring in two more and cut ASU’s lead to 9-3.

With Cal Poly bringing the bats, Sam Parlich came in to relieve Megan Elliott in the circle, where she looked to tame the Mustangs. After ASU added another run in the bottom of the third, Cal Poly put on their rally caps in the fourth with Rebecca Patton stepping in to take a 2-2 pitch deep to left center for a two-run shot and her first career home run.

The Sun Devils took offense to that bringing the bats back out in the fifth inning as Mandy Urfer hit a solo shot to right center before Katelyn Boyd smacked an RBI single through the right side to set up a bases-loaded situation. Kaylyn Castillo took the opportunity with relish as she dug in hitting .500 on the season with bases loaded and didn’t disappoint. Down 0-2 in the count Castillo knocked a ball through the right side to score another run and finish the game for an elated Sun Devil Softball crowd over 1,000 strong.

The win wraps ASU’s non-conference slate as they now slam full throttle into Pac-10 play with in-state rival, No. 2 Arizona up first in the line-up. The Sun Devils will host the Wildcats this Thursday-Saturday in Tempe at Farrington Stadium. Fans are recommended to obtain tickets prior to the games as they are close to selling out.
