No. 1 softball walk-off with win over Creighton

March 04, 2008

Katie Burkhart allowed just one hit while striking out 18 as No. 1 ASU Softball edged the Creighton Bluejays 1-0 in ten innings on Tuesday afternoon for ASU's Softball's Annual Field Trip Day. Jackie Vasquez finished the game for the Sun Devils with a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the tenth. The Sun Devils are now 22-1 overall headed into their final home tournament this weekend.

The game proved to be a pitchers duel as Katie Burkhart locked up against Creighton's No. 1 ace, Tara Oltman. Both pitchers kept the score deadlocked at 0-0 through nine innings as Oltman struck out six while allowing only six hits through nine. Burkhart was lights out though as she allowed just one bloop single, while striking out the side in the fifth and ninth innings.

The Sun Devil offense couldn't get rolling to back Burkhart's lights-out performance though, as they tacked on six hits on Oltman and left ten on base through nine innings until Jackie Vasquez stepped up to hit her third career home run to center field off an 0-1 pitch to end the game. The home run is Vasquez's first since the 2007 Super Regional against LSU where she hit a grand slam.

Next up the Sun Devils will gear up to host their fourth and final home tournament of the 2008 season as they host the Diamond Devil Invitational this weekend March 7-9 in Tempe at Farrington Stadium. Featured teams are: San Diego, Pacific, San Diego State, Utah and UC Davis.
