No. 1 Softball thunders past Marshall in doubleheader
The Sun Devil hurlers were nearly flawless on Tuesday night as they led the No. 1 ASU Softball team to two wins, 5-0 and 12-1 in five innings with Megan Elliott and Amanda Nesbitt leading the way. Jackie Vasquez and Caylyn Carlson also anchored the offense, both hitting .800 on the day with a combined seven runs scored and eight RBIs. The Sun Devils are now 36-2 overall while Marshall falls to 12-18.
Game one gave the ball to Megan Elliott where she excelled for the Devils pitching the complete-game shutout, allowing only six hits and striking out six en route to her 14th win on the season to keep her record unblemished at 14-0.
The Sun Devil offense struck hard in the third as they put four on the board in rapid succession as they rattled off four hits with RBIs from Mindy Cowles, Caylyn Carlson and Krista Donnenwirth to put ASU ahead 4-0. They added another in the fifth inning as Caylyn Carlson dug in to launch a 2-0 pitch to left center for her sixth home run of the season as ASU finished out the game with a 5-0 win.
Game two saw the offense ignite as they put 12 runs on the board in only two innings as they thundered off nine hits and capitalized on two Marshall errors to take the 12-1 lead after two complete. Jackie Vasquez, Caylyn Carlson and Krista Donnenwirth all anchored the offense as Vasquez went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Carlson went 2-for-2 for three RBIs and Donnenwirth hit 2-for3 for two RBIs.
Amanda Nesbitt held down the defense for the Sun Devils as she notched her fifth win on the season to go 5-0 overall while allowing only two hits in five complete to secure ASU's 36th win on the season.
With this series, the Sun Devils wrap non-conference action and will head up to the Bay Area this weekend to take on No. 25 Cal and No. 5 Stanford in Berkeley and Palo Alto, Calif.
