Molinaro leads women's golf at Northrop Grumman

February 09, 2010

The Arizona State women's golf team finished the second round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in seventh place. The Sun Devils have shot a 30-over 598 (300-298) over the past two rounds at the par 71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club.

"It was cold, wet and windy and pretty much just a miserable day weather-wise," said eighth year head coach Melissa Luellen. "We're only a few shots out of third place and our goal for tomorrow is to place in the top three."

Giulia Molinaro and Juliana Murcia both shot even par in the second round. Molinaro leads the team as she enters the final round in seventh after carding 2-over 144 (73-71) over the two rounds. Murcia is tied for 11th at 5-over 147 (76-71).

"Giulia and July both played very well today," said Luellen. "They both kept fighting and were just good examples of toughness on the course today. Giulia is just gaining more and more confidence and is taking it one shot at a time. July was able to overcome a pretty tough round yesterday."

Jennifer Johnson finished the second round tied for 37th at 11-over 153 (75-78) while Jaclyn Sweeney has carded 13-over 155 (76-79) over the past two rounds. Carlota Ciganda was 14-over 156 (78-78).

The Sun Devils are scheduled to tee off in a shotgun start tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. but chances of the round getting called are high as another storm is supposed to enter the Southern California area tonight.
