Men's swimming team heads to Long Beach for Pac-10 Championships


<p>This Week:<br /> The Arizona State men's swimming team heads to Long Beach, Calif., this week to compete in the Pac-10 Championships. The Championships begin Wednesday March 5 and conclude on Saturday Mar. 8. Nuess, Nevo and</p><separator></separator><p>Top Devil:<br /> Senior <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/nuess_cj00.html">CJ Nuess</a> currently holds the nations fourth fastest 400 IM time this season. The senior will look to improve on his second-place finish at last year's Pac-10 Championships. Nuess is the ASU record-holder in the 400 IM and has his name in numerous events on ASU's Top Ten lists.<br /></p><separator></separator><p>Beijing Bound:<br /> ASU junior <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/madwa_mohammed00.html">M… Madwa</a> made history last summer as he became the first Kuwaiti swimmer to qualify for the Summer Olympic Games. Madwa has qualified in the 50 freestyle and is close to qualifying in the 100 free. Madwa swam a 23.02 at the Asian Age Groups Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia this summer to qualify.<br /></p><separator></separator><p>Rewriting the Record Books:<br /> The ASU swimming team has completely broken up the school record books this season. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/nuess_cj00.html">CJ Nuess</a> broke the 400 IM record at the Texas Invitational this winter with a time of 3:44.51. He is also seventh in the 500 free, third in the 1650 free, second in the 200 breast, eighth in the 200 fly and fourth in the 400 IM. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/cvitkovic_ante00.html">A… Cvitkovic</a> is now fifth in the 200 back with a time of 1:49.09. Sean Boyle added his name to the 100 fly (ninth; 48.21) and 200 fly (sixth; 1:47.32). <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/dwelley_john00.html">John Dwelley</a> also added his name to ASU's 100 fly list (sixth; 47.97).<br /></p><separator></separator><p>Olympic Hopefuls:<br /> The Sun Devil men's swimming team has had several of their athletes qualify for the Olympic Trials. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/dwelley_john00.html">John Dwelley</a> and Sean Boyle have qualified for the United States Olympic Trials. Dwelley will attempt to qualify for this summer's games in the 100 fly while Boyle will try his hand in the 200 free, 200 fly and 100 fly. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/cvitkovic_ante00.html">A… Cvitkovic</a> will make his attempt to represent his home-country of Croatia in the 100 back while <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/neuwert_steve00.html">St… Neuwert</a> has qualified for the Australian Olympic trials in the 50 and 100 free. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/waked_vinicius00.html">V… Waked</a> will try to make it the Olympic Games for Brazil in the 100 and 200 free. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/kjellberg_magnus01.html"… Kjellberg</a> qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100 free and 100 fly for Sweden.<br /></p><separator></separator><p>Diving at Pac-10s:<br /> The scores from the Pac-10 Diving Championships will help count towards the totals for the men. Micky Benedetti made ASU history last week as he became the first Sun Devil diver to win the one meter, the three meter and the platform at the Pac-10 Championships. Benedetti also set a new Pac-10 record on the platform in the process. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/sweeney_billy00.html">Bi… Sweeney</a> placed six on the three-meter at the Pac-10 Championships.<br /></p><separator></separator><p>Recap of the Women:<br /> The Sun Devil women's swimming and diving team placed sixth at the Pac-10 Championships. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/andrew_caitlin00.html">C… Andrew</a> set four new school records in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back and 100 fly. Andrew placed second in the 100 fly and 50 free and third in the 100 free. The women's 200 free relay placed third with a new school record of 1:29.73. In diving, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/mtt/hobbs_erin00.html">Erin Hobbs</a> placed second in the three-meter.</p>
