McKenna wins championship at Cal Nike Invitational

The Arizona State women's tennis team had a stellar ending to their play at the Cal Nike Invitational, with Kelcy McKenna taking home the ITA Gold singles championship title, and the doubles team of McKenna and Micaela Hein reaching the finals match, taking second place overall.

"It was a great way to end the invitational," boasted Coach Sheila McInerney, who is in her 27th year of coaching the women's tennis program. "I'm so proud of Kelcy for making this happen."

McKenna competed in the semifinals against Alexandra Poorta from St. Mary's in a difficult three-setter. She lost the first game 3-6, but came back strong in the last two, taking them 7-5, 7-5. She had a similar turnout in the finals match, when she was matched against Annie Goransson from California. McKenna fell drastically in the first round 1-6, but rallied and took the match overall, winning her next two sets 6-4, 6-1.

McKenna and Hein made it all the way to the ITA Gold doubles final round after beating the No. 2 doubles seed of Rebecca Delgado and Tatsiana Kapshai from Sacramento State 8-2. Unfortunately, they fell in the final round, losing to the No. 1 seeded Jana Juricova and Mari Andersson of California 8-5. Michelle Brycki and Sianna Simmons also made it to the semifinals, but lost against Juricova and Andersson 8-4.

In the ITA Blue doubles, Ashlee Brown and Hannah James were defeated by Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk of Sacramento State 8-6.

The Sun Devils look to Los Angeles next for the All-American Championships, which begin on Oct. 5 and last through Oct. 10.
