Baseball overwhelms Wildcats

A crowd of 4,033 saw the Sun Devils improve to 39-5 overall with the victory in the non-conference match-up.</p><separator></separator><p>Rodgers allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out seven to earn the win and improve to 3-2 on the season. After allowing a single to the first batter of the game, he retired 21 straight Wildcat hitters before Cole Frenzel singled in the eighth. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/swagerty_jordan00.html… Swagerty</a> pitched the ninth, striking out the side while allowing an unearned run.</p><separator></separator><p><a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/macphee_zack00.html">Z… MacPhee</a> and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/marrero_deven00.html">… Marrero</a> had two hits and two RBI apiece in the win, while <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/calhoun_kole00.html">K… Calhoun</a>, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/torrez_raoul00.html">R… Torrez</a> and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/barnes_austin00.html">… Barnes</a> also drove in two runs each.</p><separator></separator><p>The game was scoreless until the fourth, when Calhoun and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/torrez_riccio00.html">… Torrez</a> drew consecutive walks to lead off the inning and, two batters later, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/torrez_raoul00.html">R… Torrez</a> brought both of them in with a double to center. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Marrero, and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/aplin_andrew00.html">A… Aplin</a> scored later in the inning on an error to make it 4-0.</p><separator></separator><p>ASU then took command in the sixth, scoring seven runs in the inning. Marrero had an RBI single, Aplin drove in a run with a groundout and Marrero then scored on a wild pitch to put the Sun Devils on top 7-0. MacPhee then had a two-run double, and Calhoun capped off the inning with a two-run homer to right center. It was his team-leading ninth home run of the season.</p><separator></separator><p>Barnes had a two-run single in the seventh to make the score 13-0, and Arizona scored its only run on an error by Swagerty in the ninth.</p><separator></separator><p>The Sun Devils now have the rest of the week off and then will return to action on May 10, when they begin a two-game series with BYU. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.</p>
