Baseball defeats San Diego
Ten different players recorded a hit on Monday as the No. 1 Arizona State University baseball team defeated San Diego 15-0 in front of 2,967 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improved to 26-1 on the season with the victory.
ASU scored runs in each of the first seven innings to dominate the Toreros. Jordan Swagerty led the offensive attack, going 3-for-6 and driving in two runs. Drew Maggi, Zach Wilson, Johnny Ruettiger and Jimmy Patterson all had two hits each, and Maggi, Wilson and Zack MacPhee had two RBI apiece in the win. Ten different Sun Devils drove in at least one run in the game.
Brady Rodgers got the start and went seven innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the year. Josh Moody pitched two scoreless innings of relief to finish off the game.
The Sun Devils jumped on top early with two runs in the first. Riccio Torrez started the scoring with an RBI single and Wilson followed him with a run-scoring single of his own. They added three more runs in the second, as Maggi and Kole Calhoun each had RBI singles and Maggi scored on an error.
ASU added single runs in each of the next four innings to take a 9-0 lead, and then capped off the scoring with six runs in the seventh. Swagerty and MacPhee had two RBI apiece in that inning.
The Devils finish up their two-game series with San Diego on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
