Baseball beats Washington

Box Score

Kole Calhoun reached base in all five plate appearances to lead the No. 1 Arizona State University baseball team to a 10-4 win over Washington on Sunday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improve to 33-5 overall, 11-4 in the Pac-10, with the win in the finale of the teams' three-game series.

Calhoun was 3-for-3 with a home run, two singles and two walks. It was his sixth home run of the season. Zack MacPhee and Raoul Torrez also had three-hit games while Riccio Torrez and Johnny Ruettiger had two hits each. Drew Maggi and Zach Wilson each had a home run in the game, and eight of the nine Sun Devil starters had at least one hit.

Jake Borup earned the win on the mound to improve to 8-1. He went 5.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and three runs. Brady Rodgers went 2.2 shutout innings of relief, escaping a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth and then inducing inning-ending double plays in both the seventh and eighth innings. Jake Barrett worked the ninth, giving up a run on two hits.

ASU scored first as Maggi led off the game with a home run, and then MacPhee scored later in the first inning on a double play to give the Sun Devils a 2-0 lead. They would extend the lead in the third on Calhoun's two-run homer to right.

Washington scored a run in the fifth, but the Devils answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own. Raoul Torrez had a two-run single and Matt Newman followed him with an RBI double down the right field line.

After the Huskies scored two in the sixth off Borup to cut the lead to 7-3, Rodgers came on from the bullpen and inherited runners on first and second, but he struck out pinch hitter Eric Peterson and got shortstop David Bentrott to fly out to end the inning.

ASU got some insurance in the seventh on a two-run homer by Wilson, and then Riccio Torrez added an RBI single in the eighth.

The Sun Devils have five games next week, beginning with a two-game series against San Francisco on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
